ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Phil Kinsley
Field CTO & CISO
Microsoft security, cloud, identity, and responsible AI.
Connect on LinkedIn ↗I’m an enterprise technology executive and Field CTO/CISO with more than 20 years of experience across cybersecurity, cloud, AI, and platform transformation. A former Microsoft employee, I have worked with Microsoft technology since 2005 and bring a global perspective shaped by public-sector, financial-services, education, and consulting environments.
My work connects technology strategy with the realities of delivery: how teams are organized, which investments matter, how risk is governed, and whether the systems people depend on can be operated securely. I advise executive teams on those decisions while staying close to the architecture and implementation work that makes them credible.
From architecture to accountable leadership
My background includes senior solutions engineering at Microsoft, infrastructure program leadership at AWS, global consulting and cybersecurity program delivery at Accenture, and CTO, CISO, and practice leadership roles. That experience spans federal and regulated environments, enterprise modernization, and the development of security and AI governance services.
I have led onshore, offshore, and nearshore delivery teams and worked across operations serving the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia-Pacific. Those settings have reinforced the importance of clear ownership, practical standards, and operating models that work across organizational boundaries.
Where I focus
Microsoft security and identity are central to my work, including Zero Trust, endpoint management, cloud security, and data protection. My wider interests include multicloud architecture, responsible AI adoption, AI risk governance, and the way automation changes both delivery and enterprise risk.
I also work at the leadership layer: portfolio priorities, service development, executive stakeholder alignment, engineering standards, and the growth of technical teams. A sound design needs a team that can maintain it, a business purpose that justifies it, and evidence that its controls are effective.
Education and professional development
- MIT Sloan: Artificial Intelligence: Implications for Business Strategy.
- Saïd Business School, University of Oxford: Artificial Intelligence.
- Bachelor of Science with Honours, Edge Hill University.
My professional qualifications also include Microsoft Copilot AI Champion, Certified Agile Scrum Master, Certified Microsoft Endpoint Management, and ITIL Foundation certification.
I am currently pursuing ISC2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification. It is a professional development goal, not a credential I currently hold.
Why Nexlinks exists
I publish to share useful technical interpretation and questions that help practitioners and leaders make better decisions. These field notes draw on the intersection of architecture, security operations, governance, and executive responsibility, with concrete examples and source links wherever they support the discussion.
The aim is to explain what a technology enables, what it depends on, and what a team should verify before relying on it. Product announcements are a starting point; tested controls and accountable operation are what turn them into a useful outcome.
Nexlinks is an independent personal publication. Former Microsoft employment does not imply current Microsoft affiliation or endorsement.
